Why invest in DRC?

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a country which offers abundant opportunities for all foreign companies, though it’s unique biodiversity, vast minerals and forest resources, rich soil conducive to agriculture, large population base and generally open trading system.

The third largest country in Africa, Congo's development potential is considerable. Copper, cobalt, coffee, petroleum, and diamonds provide most of its foreign exchange earnings. The largely unexploited forests represent the world's largest reserves of tropical hardwood. Arable land is plentiful through much of Congo, and inland waters contain abundant supplies of fish. Improved political stability is boosting Congo's long-term potential to effectively exploit its vast wealth of mineral and agricultural resources. The economy is largely under-mobilized and underused, with 80 percent of the labor force deployed in subsistence activities, and large untapped mineral, agricultural and energy potential. Renewed growth could rely on the country's low-cost and potentially competitive labor force, strong natural resource base, large domestic market, dynamic local communities and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), preferential access to European markets, and proximity to the South African economy.

Finding a Business Partner

Unless one is a major supplier for one of Congo's few large companies, finding a local business partner is probably the single most important factor in successful commercial dealings in Congo. Many businesses in Congo purchase from long-time vendors while reliable information on the market and about the creditworthiness of customers is obtainable only on the spot. After-sales service and spare parts are crucial, and independent local services are generally unreliable or unobtainable. Finding a reliable business partner, however, requires time and effort. The local commercial environment encourages cozy long-term relationships, fierce competition, and efforts to make one-shot high-profit deals.

Investment climate

Since 2002, the country has been provided with a new investment code that easier and secure investment. It has passed and implemented other laws that favor business development. The new investment code provides a fair investment and business environment for both domestic and foreign investors, and easier the approval procedures.

Note that:

  • The Democratic Republic of Congo is now member of the Organization for the Harmonization of Corporate Law in Africa (OHADA);
  • It excludes the nationalization and expropriation;
  • Investors have the freedom of transferring any investment  generated income in and out of the country;
  • It has set up one-stop-shop for investments;
  • Has removes administrative barriers for setting up enterprises (authentication of visa, certificate of non-state employee, criminal records, etc.);
  • It has cut of the costs to obtain the new trade register;
  • It publishes enterprise charters in the gazette (Journal Official), a government journal;
  • It has set up notarial offices across the country to facilitate administrative processes;
  • It has established a new mechanism for the safety of investments;
  • The country settles disputes under the International Centre of Dispute Settlement convention (CIRDI), headquartered in Washington, USA.
